Every now and then, a new artist comes along who seems to effortlessly capture the imagination. Singer/songwriter Alyssa Bernal, a relatable girl with an unforgettable voice, is just that artist for a new generation.
Alyssa was your everyday American teenager, when her heartfelt, acoustic YouTube clips caught the eye of superstar producer Pharrell Williams. A year later, and her debut album from Star Trak Entertainment brought a much-needed breath of fresh air to the pop landscape.
For Alyssa, music comes about as naturally as breathing. The singer/songwriter was raised in a music-steeped household in San Antonio, Texas. Being raised in a family of musicians didn’t exactly ignite her passion for performing, though. “I was so shy!” Remembers Alyssa with a laugh, “my parents would dress me up and make me sing but I hated it.”
Somehow, her love of music overcame her fear of performing. By the time she was a teen in San Antonio, Alyssa uploaded a few homemade videos of herself singing cover songs like Rihanna’s “Take a Bow.” She taught herself to play guitar, and soon one video lead to dozens, and a rapidly-growing fan base around the globe.
She received so many responses to her videos, Alyssa at first neglected her most famous admirer: Pharrell Williams. The platinum-selling artist and producer even tried contacting Alyssa’s high school to get in touch with her, but “they didn’t know who Pharrell was!” laughs Alyssa. Finally, her mother spotted a MySpace message from Star Trak and 24 hours later, they flew to meet Williams and Interscope Records chairman Jimmy Iovine at the Star Trak headquarters in Los Angeles. She impressed them with “Hey Love,” one of the first songs she ever wrote, a perfectly Alyssa tune: breezy but strong, intricate and approachable.
Fast forward a few years and an amazing journey later, Alyssa is settled in LA and writing the rest of her story. And this time, as an independent artist.
"This business is tough. I was very young, and I'm not sure if I was ready for that world although I'm very grateful for that chapter in my life. I've had to do a bit of soul searching, learning, and growing up. And now, here I am 4 years later. A whole new person. "
Alyssa is focused on reintroducing herself to her fans as an artist. As she has changed and grown as a person, so has her music. Currently, she has been writing and recording new music almost every day while of course staying true to her roots, her YouTube channel.
"I've grown obsessed with hard drums, long synths, and haunting pop melodies. I'd say that's the formula for my new stuff. Then again, I don't know! I'm in such an experimental phase. But if I had to categorize it, I'd call it 'dark pop'."
There are butterflies as Alyssa gears up for the release of her first single in years. Expectations may be high, but not as high as the support and demand from her "Lysseners" for new music.
With her new creative control, Alyssa's ready to show her supporters a side of her that they've never seen before and write the rest of her story as her own recreated artist.
